An officer of the institute revealed that the dialysis unit in question, an extended part of SIUT Chablani Medical Centre of Sukkur, as per plan, will start functioning in the mid of August and it was expected that it would carry out 100,000 dialysis sessions to some 950 patients living in Larkana and its adjoining areas on a yearly basis.  “Twelve dialysis machines have already been transported to Larkana, which will now be put for trial testing for a period of two weeks. By Mukhtar Alam (Pakistan News & Features Services) Reporting a surge of COVID-19 infections among its registered patients, the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) on May 14 revealed that presently it was diagnosing at least two such patients daily.  The SIUT treating over 16,000 dialysis, transplant and cancer patients whose immunity is compromised because of the disease or treatment, a communication from the institute stated, adding that such patients contact infections including COVID-19 readily and frequently and have to be protected vigorously.  “Due to the spread of COVID-19 in the community last week, 55 more patients of dialysis, transplant and cancer have been admitted in the SIUT overwhelming our capacity for coronavirus treatment.”  The SIUT further disclosed that there were over 6,000 registered dialysis patients who have to come twice or thrice a week for free dialysis, out of which 41 patients were under treatment for COVID-19. “At leas...

By Mukhtar Alam (Pakistan News & Features Services)  The Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), Karachi, has detected 207 coronavirus positive cases among people who attended its coronavirus clinic commenced operations on March 18. A SIUT communication on April 17 gave to understand that the infection rate among the people screened and tested at the clinic was over 23 percent in comparison to provincial average rate of 10-12 percent.  Moreover, the rate of corona serious patients was also found on the higher side at the SIUT. By Mukhtar Alam (Pakistan News & Features Services) Apprehending that number of COVID-19 was going to increase in Sindh in the coming days, the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) on April 3 hinted it will have to expand its existing care facilities for coronavirus positive patients significantly. A SIUT press release issued on April 3 said that the institute will need further ventilators and intensive care facilities to meet the future load of corona positive patients.  The communication was not clear about the availability of the required resources or new equipment, however, a source in the institute said that anyone can help in such an emergency situation. “Like past, it can be government or philanthropists.”  The SIUT had started an exclusive coronavirus clinic on March 18, inviting its registered patients as well as the general population suspecting the viral disease within them to report to the clinic for related screening.
